How to use the goal planner
- Enter the goal and how many years away it is.
- Choose whether the amount is in today's money (it then grows with inflation) or in money of that year.
- Tick the ways you will invest: SIP, step-up SIP, a lump sum today, a recurring deposit, PPF or Sukanya Samriddhi.
- Enter the amounts you already plan for some of them, and press Make this fill the gap on the one the planner should work out.
How the amount is worked out
Each instrument grows with the same formulas as its own calculator on this site. The amounts you fix are grown to the goal year first; the one that fills the gap covers the rest:
Amount needed = (Goal in that year − value of the fixed parts) ÷ value of ₹1 in the instrument that fills the gap
The result is rounded up (to ₹10 for monthly amounts, ₹50 for PPF and Sukanya, ₹100 for a lump sum), so the plan always reaches the goal. PPF and Sukanya deposits cannot go above ₹1,50,000 a year; if the gap needs more, the planner says so.
Example: a goal of ₹50 lakh in today's money, 15years away, at 6.5% inflation, is ₹1,28,59,205 in that year. With Lump sum ₹2,00,000 today and PPF ₹1,50,000 a year, the sip needed is ₹15,260 a month. The plan then reaches ₹1,28,62,752.
Frequently asked questions
How much SIP do I need for ₹1 crore?
At 12% a year, about ₹19,820 a month for 15 years, or ₹10,010 a month for 20 years. With a 10% yearly step-up you could start at ₹11,520 a month for 15 years.
Why enter the goal in today's money?
Because prices rise. ₹50 lakh of today's money is ₹1.29 crore in 15 years at 6.5% inflation. Planning for the bare ₹50 lakh would need only ₹0 a month of SIP instead of ₹15,260, and leave you short when the day comes.
Can I use PPF for a goal less than 15 years away?
Not fully. PPF matures 15 years after the year you open it, so the planner only offers it for goals 15 or more years away. For longer goals it counts deposits until the last 5-year block that ends by the goal, then keeps the account without deposits, still earning interest.
How does Sukanya Samriddhi fit a goal for my daughter?
The account can be opened for a girl aged 10 or under. Deposits run for 15 years and it matures 21 years after opening, or it can be closed for her marriage once she is 18. The planner uses it only when the goal falls on one of those dates. Withdrawing up to half for her education at 18 is allowed but is not modelled here.
What if returns are lower than expected?
You need to invest more. For ₹1 crore in 15 years, a SIP needs ₹19,820 a month at 12%, but ₹26,230 at 9%. Mutual fund returns are not guaranteed, so try a lower rate too.
